History

Music at Georgia Tech dates back to 1906, 21 years after the founding of the institution. The Men's Glee Club became the first student organization on campus. Ramblin' Wreck was arranged in 1912, and in 1925 the Men's Glee Club and the Band released a joint recording, making Georgia Tech the first college in the South to have its songs recorded. In 1949–51, the Men's Glee Club toured Europe performing at Army and Air Force bases; later in 1955 they traveled to Greenland, Bermuda, Newfoundland, and Europe.

The Music Department was formed in 1963, making academic credit available for participation in the Glee Club. In 1974, the Tech Women's Chorale was formed, and one year later, the Glee Club and Women's Choir merged to form the Chorale , the first mixed ensemble on campus.

In 1997 William "Doc" Caldwell was hired as Director of Choral Activities. The Men's Glee Club was reorganized, and the Chamber Choir was formed one year later. After six years, Doc Caldwell retired, and in 2003, Dr. Jerry Ulrich took over as the new Director of Choral Activities. Since then the program has continued to evolve, including performances in new venues and expanding its repertoire to include modern, avante garde , and world music.
