WREK Programming for Monday
Kosher Noise (7 - 8 PM)
Kosher Noise, WREK's Israeli music show, brings you old and new tunes
from the Holy Land - everything from jazz, hip-hop, rap, pop and even
some klezmer to round it out. Jewish music, not surprisingly,
accompanied Jewish people around the globe and we follow and sample it
for you. One of the cool things you will notice is that much of the now
"pop" music of Israel is about 10 years behind America in its style, so
if you liked the late 80's and 90's (who doesn't?) you're in for a treat
in that deparment. For 60 minutes and change, you are highly encouraged
to have a taste of this world's melting pot - aka JOM. Let's make a
deal: If you don't like our show, we'll turn the clock back to 7 PM for you.
Indian Masala (8 - 9 pm)
A mix of Hindi music from the great Indian sub-continent featuring
various music styles such as Punjabi, Hindi, and much more. Featuring
new and old artists like A.R. Rahman, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle,
Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh, etc. Requests are welcomed. Tune in every week to
hear your favorite Indian song on this new show. The show is presented
by India Club at Georgia Tech.
Sub-Saharan Vibes (9 - 10 pm)
STILL NOT AN AFRO-POP SHOW! King Sunny Ade, Fela, Miriam Makeba, Master
Drummers of Dagbon, people whose names we don't even know. From the modern
to the ancient. Your hosts try to prove that African Music really is a
"Vast Sprawling Cornucopia of Sound"!. Fortunately, that's not an
especially hard task.
French Caribbean Show (10 - 11 pm)
A mix of classic zouk love, kompa, beguine, and kizomba. The rich musical heritage
of the French Caribbean is put on display for an hour with jams ranging from the
uptempo kompa sounds of artists such as Zin and Kompa Kreyol, through the politically
inspired vibes of Ti Manno, to the musical wizardry of collectives such as Haitiando
and Haiti Twoubadou. Though the tracklist is primarily zouk (can you say Kassav?)
and zouk love classics from popular French Carribean artists of the last decade
(Slai, Leila Chicot, Thierry Cham) and more current acts (Princess Lova, Ayenn, Soumia, Carimi!!!),
the musical odyssey that is Monday Night Fever takes you beyond these zouk artists
to help you appreciate the similarities between French Caribbean music and other
closely related musical styles, such as kizomba (Bruna, Oliver N'goma) and cabo love.
Honestly, you never know what we're about to hit you with, but the soothing effect
of the music is just what you need after a rough Monday, so tune in..........
Continental Drift (11 pm - Midnight)
The theory of Continental Drift suggests that the Earth was once one great, peaceful, land mass,
and over the millennia has split into the fragmented, chaotic world we have now. In a bold effort
to promote global peace and understanding, WREK has been conducting a grand experiment for more than
ten years now. Our theory is that by playing music from all over the world, we can unite the Earth
into one great land mass once again, thereby fostering unity and love amongst all the world's citizens.
