Insurance imposition
Georgia Tech has contracted with Pearce and Pearce, Inc. to provide student health insurance.
Effective Fall 2006, the following students are required to have health insurance:
- All graduate students receiving a tuition waiver as part of their graduate assistantship award
- All undergraduate, graduate and ESL international students holding F or J visas
- All graduate students enrolled in programs that require proof of health insurance. Currently these are students enrolled in the BMED and CHBE programs
- All graduate students receiving fellowships that fully fund their tuition
The mandatory insurance will be charged by the Bursar's office and placed on the student's account.
Those students who are able to provide proof of insurance coverage that meets the requirements of the University
System Plan will be able to apply for a waiver, and if approved the Bursar's office will waive the charge
accordingly. Do not count on being exempted from the insurance, however. Come prepared to purchase Tech's. Very often
the Georgia Tech one is cheaper anyway.
The premium for a student in the mandatory plan will be $358.00 for fall semester and $472.00 for the spring
and summer semesters. More and updated information will hopefully be found soon at the
Health Center,
Pearce and Pearce, or maybe also at the
OIE, who handled this prior to fall 2006.
For German exchange students, it might be a good idea to check out the DKV since many Germans come over
here with their health insurance that is about $30 a month within the first year. It has the advantage
that it covers more than the GA Tech insurance does, such as dental and optical care.
Waiver application deadline
Everything at GT has a deadline, also the insurance waiver application. If you are in the situation that
your current plan will cover you in the US and you'd like to keep it, make sure you don't miss the deadline.
For the spring 2005 term, the deadline was December 9 (before the end of the fall term!). The deadline for the
upcoming fall 2006 semester might be available through OIE,
who used to handle this:
Waiver application form,
OIE email, or Sabrina Ross at
+1 (404) 894-7477.
